How to grind concrete countertop

Mastering how to grind and polish concrete countertops is critical to any project’s successful completion. Step – Safety Information. I define three stages: grinding , honing and polishing. Grinding can be thought of as the roughest way to flatten a concrete surface. Polishing is when you take that ground surface to a progressively smoother, shiny finish.


When doing pre-cast concrete projects, it’s not usually necessary to use a grinder. All concrete will have air trapped in the mix due to the mixing process. And there’s no admixture you can add to make this air disappear, dissolve or not get entrapped. Fine aggregates and sand tend to trap air. Easiest method is to get something to stack around.

Grinding will expose some of the sand and aggregate which will give the concrete countertop a life.


By raising the patterns in the concrete any staining that may occur during normal use will be much harder to see. The countertop will be flatter, as any high spots will be leveled. They will instantly give your kitchen a high end look and feel. Building concrete counters is truly an art. First, there are machines that grind and machines that polish.


The two are different - machines designed exclusively for polishing are smaller and lighter than grinders. Concrete counters make a statement in any kitchen. Switch to 100-grit abrasive and sand the surfaces again. Use a steel-wool pad to apply concrete sealer to the countertop.


Let dry for minutes, then apply a second coat. Set the finished countertops on top of the cabinets. Keep it even: Do not use a wet grinder like a high-speed metal grinder. With wet grinders, the whole face of the grinding disc or turbo-cup wheel should be pressed evenly against the concrete.

Cover all doorways with plastic sheeting. High-end granite countertop shops often polish the edges of the countertop underside while home center granite is left rough. Grind the bottom of the countertop (the top of the mold that is facing up) until level and smooth. Use a diamond grinding wheel with dust collection system. Until I learned about polyurea, I had planned to refinish and reseal my countertops with the strongest sealer I had found during my two or so months of research on the topic.
