The lids used in this Instructable are from plastic tupperware found in the top shelf of the dollar store. Made with concrete and cardboard inserts, these common household coasters are elevated to modern and chic conversational pieces of table decor! I immediately remembered some lovely concrete coasters I had seen on Etsy when I was putting together this concrete DIYs and decor inspiration post. But you know I am hard headed and am not going to pay $35. Guys, you can get pounds of concrete for like, dollars.


Today we are going to revisit the common household coasters ! Thank you and big hugs to DesirĂ©e and all the lovely readers at The 36th Avenue for having me here. Have you seen the billion DIY concrete projects all over Pinterest? Well I joined the fun this week! Once the concrete has drie pop your new coasters out of the bowls. Use the paint and stencils to decorate your coasters (optional) Put the rubber bumpers on the bottom side of the coasters (I don’t recommend skipping this step, as the bottom is quite rough) And that’s it!


Pour yourself a drink and enjoy your new coasters ! I love how easily you can use paint to re-create more expensive designs or to transform a piece with just a touch of extra color. Once you decide how thick you would like your coasters , mark the height on the inner edges before you fold them, so you have a visual measure when pouring in the concrete. Fold up the sides and tape around the outsides to form your moulds. Mix up the concrete according to directions or until its fairly runny and pour it into the moulds.

We added water and mixed our concrete until we achieved a pancake- batter like consistency. Make sure you mix your concrete thoroughly. Any dry lumps can create weak spots and voids in your concrete. Step 4: Pour Your Concrete and Let Your Coasters Cure.

The tapping gets rid of the bubbles in the concrete. Then let it sit and harden according to the package instructions on the concrete bag you used. Sand down any rough edges or ridges in the concrete using sandpaper.


We used 1and 2grit sandpaper for our coasters. When you get a smooth consistency, pour the concrete mixture into your molds and shake the mold lightly, until the concrete sits flat. When the concrete is ready, about minutes later, you can pop them out of the molds. Use a concrete sealer to seal and protect your coasters from future, inevitable spills. You’ll be making concrete coasters with cardboard inserts. Made this way, the coasters aren’t heavy because you’re using concrete just to cover the cardboard. But they look really unique.
