Can you tile over laminate counters

This project involves laying ceramic tile over a laminate countertop , around a top-mounted kitchen sink and on both sides of a cooking range. The first step in any remodeling project of this scale is to plan your layout carefully. Laminate : While the point of installing tile over laminate is to cover up bad laminate , there is a limit as to how bad that laminate can be. If the laminate is de-laminating in areas, the tile will not hold.


Use contact cement to reapply the laminate. If you want to tile over a laminate counter , the counter has to have a flat edge. Counters with rounded edges cannot be tiled over.


That is until inventor Armand Tavy came up with a system for putting ceramic tile right on top of a laminate counter top like this. I use inch ceramic tile and inch bullnose tile over the existing laminate counter. I had to cut most of the tiles in half to create the diamond pattern.

You don’t need to remove the laminate before creating your new tile countertops. If the old countertops are smooth and even, simply tile over them. Laminate countertops (often called Formica, although that is actually the name of only one manufacturer) come in just about every color and pattern imaginable. Covered my tile countertop (mexican tile ) with a concrete resurfacer. Made to go over existing concrete. The stuff is cheap, used less than one box that cost $8. A good way to renew the look of your kitchen countertops is to tile them.


I also put mortar under the backer board over the Formica. Formica countertops can become outdated and worn with time. AS long as you have a nice level surface for the tile to adhere to it comes out great and saved me a ton of work. I used mortar for adhering the tile to the top of backer board. Once the countertop was complete, I thought, ‘how about tiling right over the laminate to create a custom look on the backsplash?

We got all sorts of crazy and decided to pour concrete right over the laminate counters in our kitchen. But if you mean - can you put new laminate over old laminate - yes. Just wash the old stuff really well and maybe quick run a sander over it.


Works great - done it for my cheap customers and for my cheap self. Using a quick-setting concrete over tile is a perfect solution.
